about
I am a Data Scientist that has a hard time settling on one thing only. I have worked in academia and successfully defended my Ph.D. in 2019, in the lovely city of Ghent (Belgium). Afterwards I switched gears and opted for a career in industry, and in 2020 relocated to Porto, Portugal (yes, mid pandemic!). I am very comfortable with python and while I do have experience in data engineering, my preference is in modelling and in data visualization and story-telling.
experience
FARFETCH
Data Scientist
September 2020 - present
FARFETCH is the global platform for luxury fashion
I have worked in the Experimentation team, supporting internal experiments (A/B tests and others) for about one and a half years. This entailed diving deep into statistics, developing dashboards and maintaining an internal platform used throughout the entire company, as well as providing support and tailored solutions for anyone’s particular experimentation needs. In January 2022 I decided to join the Personalisation & Recommendations team, a newly formed group whose aim is both the development of products that are personalised to each user, and of models and tools that can support other teams’ personalisation efforts.
Crunch Analytics
Data Scientist
September 2019 - August 2020
Crunch drives business impact by transforming the way organizations use their data
Crunch is a consultancy company that focuses on aiding retailers make use of their data to enable better decision making. At Crunch I participated in several different projects, developing my skills very broadly – both in data engineering, data science and analytics, as well as providing training in the form of deep learning courses and communicating results and plans to a non-technical audience.
iCBR
Research Fellow - Data Scientist
September 2013 - October 2014
iCBR (former IBILI) is a biomedical research institution connected to the University of Coimbra
Between my M.Sc. and my Ph.D., I worked at IBILI for one year as a data scientist. I was part of a research project where we aimed to preemptively identify patients at risk of developing an opththalmological condition, based on OCT scans and through machine learning. We achieved very interesting results, that I got to showcase at a few conferences.
education
Gent Universiteit
Ph. D.
2014 - 2019
During my Ph.D. I worked in the CompOmics lab at Ghent University and VIB. I was supervised by Prof. Dr. Lennart Martens and Dr. Sven Degroeve, and developed data-driven tools to assist in the identification of mass spectrometry data in two different -omics settings: HR-MS2 spectra in the context of proteomics, and MS images in the context of metabolomics. You can read my thesis here. Besides my thesis, I guided M.Sc. students in their Bioinformatics and Machine Learning Courses, participated in conferences and in European-wide projects.
Universidade de Coimbra
M. Sc.
2007 - 2013
I studied biomedical engineering with a specialisation in imaging and radiation. This included courses in biology and phisiology, physics and maths, and programming and management, so very well rounded. For my MSc thesis I worked on a computational simulation of how light propagates in a heterogeneous medium, taking a finite differences implementation of Maxwell’s equations and studying these systems’ behaviours in MatLab. You can find a pdf of my thesis here.
České vysoké učení technické v Praze
Erasmus
2011
I spent one semester in Prague as part of the Erasmus exchange program. This semester is very dear to me, as I met all sorts of different people and had the opportunity to visit many different places. I did my coursework in several different faculties scattered around Prague.
a little more about me
I am the definition of a jack-of-all-trades, master-of-none when it comes to my interests & hobbies. I never tire of learning and experimenting new things! Sustainability and community building are very important to me. My native language is Portuguese, I’m fluent in English and have a basic grasp on Dutch, French and Spanish. I love stubbornly (or, if you’re an optimist, preserverantly) riding my bike, picking up assorted hobbies, reading, cooking, playing videogames, boardgames and RPGs, and pretending my cats love me as much as I them!
